I just go through this loop of thinking “OK, that’s a clever comment, nicely self-referential, I’m upvoting that. No, wait, I’m showing just the lack of discipline Eliezer is talking about! I should have the strength to downvote. CannibalSmith is setting a good test. Neat of him to do it. Must upvote...”
I downvoted. Clearly I really do need the practice. It’s clever of him to provide the opportunity to do so. I should upvote...
So, at the time of writing, this comment is at −16, which suggests that a lot of us have set our preferences to display all comments regardless of score.
Should we, perhaps, be more trusting of our fellow readers, and actually accept the existence of a threshold below which comments get hidden?
ETA: If somebody’s practicing on me too, I’m fine with that, but may I propose a general policy that we are allowed to be polite and, you know, human without random downvotes?
PRACTICE DOWNVOTING ON THIS COMMENT FAGS LOLOLOLOL
Damn, now I can’t decide between downvoting this comment as practice, and upvoting it for giving me an opportunity to practice.
check his comment history, find a couple good comments you missed, and upvote them. Then downvote this one.
I have taken your advice.

Too few comments ever get hidden for this to be of any use at this point, people are just being curious.
I’ve upped mine to 1 and will probably raise it further.
thanks =)

Voted up for your ETA...
Obeying. Even though I had some strong reasons to upvote. Edit : you’re running for a record there—the most downvoted comment on LW :-)
Gotta do something with all that karma. :)
Like others, I want to vote this up and down; you should make another comment saying “tip jar”. :-)
Kossack!
With −28 points, why is the comment I am responding to not the last top-level one on the page?
It is for me. Perhaps you inadvertently changed the comment sort order dropdown?
Thanks. You have to sort by “Top” to get that effect. I was sorting by “Popular”.
I don’t think I ever changed it—perhaps “Popular” is the default.
Unnecessary and gratuitous. Downvoted. :-)
