I think people generally overrate the importance of economic incentive and to a huge degree.
Economic incentive can coerce. It can create the bare minimum of motivation. But trully high level of motivation, the burning passion, the enamouring and intoxicating feeling of purpose, can only come from intrinsic sources.
Yes, that’s for sure. But that doesn’t seem Altman’s and Gates’ talking point: “we will provide those <5% (maybe still much less) of nerds who have burning passion for abstract mathematical knowledge with excellent tutors to teach it”. The PR point is meant to be much more egalitarian.
