I estimate about one-third wear masks (edit: outside) in my suburb. I probably would wear one on a very crowded sidewalk, but IMO they’re not necessary in an outside place where you can reliably avoid being near others.
When we’re looking back on this and trying to figure out what the effect of masks was, it’s going to be really hard to separate the norm-building effects of wearing masks from their actual protective effects outdoors.
Our household has moved from “we don’t wear masks outdoors when it’s trivial to avoid people” to “eh, it might shift norms and doesn’t hurt much so yeah we’ll wear them”.
