Yes. A farmer does not want to give a bushel of wheat to this “future Singularity inventors” for free. Those guys may starve to death as far as he cares, if they don’t pay the said bushel of wheat with a good money.
They understand it.
Now, they don’t need any wheat anymore. And nothing what this farmer has to offer. Or anybody else for that matter. The commerce has stopped here and they see no reason for giving tremendous gifts around. They have paid for their wheat, vino and meat. Now, they are not shopping anymore.
The farmer will never know about these “Singularity inventors”.
The inventors themselves may not know. The scenario presumes that the “Singularity inventors” have control of their “invention” and know that it is “the creation of the Singularity”. The history of world-changing inventions of the past suggests that no-one will be in control of “the Singularity”. No-one at the time will know that that is what it is, and will participate in whatever it looks like according to their own local interests.
The farmer will not know about the Singularity, but he’s probably on Facebook.

Except for all the people on this site, who talk nonstop about deliberately setting off such a thing?

Most of us don’t interact at all in our daily lives with farmers. It’s pretty senseless to speak about them.
Western countries also don’t let people starve to death but generally have the goal of feeding their population. Especially when it comes to capable programmers.
Just for the sake of the discussion. Could be a team of millionaire programmers, as well. And not the farmers, but the doctors and lawyers on the other side. The commerce, the divide of labor stops there, at the S moment. Every exchange of goods, stops as well.
Except some Giga charity, which may or may not happen.

The farmer should understand.

“Why, so can I, and so can any man
but will they foom when you do conjure them?”
The annotated RichardKennaway:
This is a quote from Henry IV part I, when Glendower is showing off to the other rebels, claiming to be a sorceror, and Hotspur is having none of it.
Glendower:
I can call spirits from the vasty deep.
Hotspur:
Why, so can I, or so can any man
But will they come when you do call for them?
As a happy coincidence...

Having the discussion on examples that are wrong is bad because it leads to bad intuitions.
Not all interactions between people are commerce. People take plenty of actions that benefit other people that aren’t about commerce.
