But there’s a bad thing happens when you have a group that are culturally adjacent to the hyper-analytical programmers, but who aren’t that sort of person themselves.
I… don’t think “hyper-analytical programmers” are a thing. We are all susceptible the the risk of “falling into crazy” to a larger degree than we think we are. There is something in the brain where openness, being necessary for Bayesian updating, also means suspending your critical faculties to consider a hypothetical model seriously, and so one runs a risk that the hypothetical takes hold, and the confirming evidence has an outsize influence on the inner “model accuracy evaluation engine”.
for me it mostly felt like I and my group of closest friends were at the center of the world, with the last hope for the future depending on our ability to hold to principle. there was a lot of prophesy of varying qualities, and a lot of importance placed suddenly on people we barely knew then rapidly withdrawn when those people weren’t up for being as crazy as we were.
Thanks. Are you up for saying more about what algorithm (you in hindsight notice/surmise) you were following internally during that time, and how it did/didn’t differ from the algorithm you were following during your “hyper-analytical programmer” times?

Yep. If you were crazy, what would that feel like from the inside?
