If God made His rules arbitrarily, then there is no reason to follow them except for self-interest (which is hardly a moral motive)

Yeah, this jumped out at me too, but I think that expanding on that caveat would probably lose the intended audience.
I would just remove the parenthetical and/or change the example. Possibly explain the distinction between terminal and instrumental goals first.
