Due to comparative advantage not changing much is actually a relativly good, straightforward strategy: just farm and redirect money.
As an example of these Altruistic Ones user Rain been mentioned, so they are out there. They all be praised!
Factor in time and demographics. A lot of LWlers are young people, looking for ways to make money; they are not able to spend much yet, and haven’t had much impact yet. Time will have to show whether these stay true to their goals, or wether they are tempted to go the vicious path of always-growing investments into status.
Tripitaka
because there’s a risk of going funny in the head
Funny in which way? Do you want to avoid an automatic “makro-of-denial”-invocation or are you afraid of them joining Eliezers evergrowing crowd of memetically subverted FAI-lers ?
As a fellow semi-lurker and also mentally ill person, a heartly welcome to you! Did you choose you username with regards to black-swan-bets?
Regarding possible ingredients of Felix Felicis, Malaclaw Venom bestows upon the victim an unnatural misfortune; maybe this effect can be reversed and exponentiated by the process of brewing, and thats the hard part? (EY knows about this; second flask in case you ever wondered what that did.)
In accordance to this comment and the high number of upvotes received, here is the place to list further threads worthy of preservation, advertising, rejuvenation; also to list short-term/long-term solutions to this problem.
List of threads:
The thread where people offered listening-time to depressed people.
Possible super-easy solutions to better ensure visibility of these threads:
make a wiki-page
reposting in every other “monthly open thread”
include a link in “welcome to lesswrong”-thread
Any and all suggestions are welcome, especially longterm-solutions ; and I hereby precommit to make a wiki-page with the suggestions a week from now and post it in at least the next two open threads.

Does anyone else feel like this sort of threads/comments should be somehow better archived/presented/integrated? Threads like this are vanishing far to fast into oblivion. Low-hanging fruits of lesswrong: better “advertising” the possibilities/chances of the LW-network.
Examples include:
The thread where people offered listening-time to depressed people.
The thread with the ongoing survey for zip-codes of LWlers.
This mentoring-thread.

And buy a new LAN-cable, if the old one is too short.
Isn’t it a matter of news being played at clear, easyly recognizable times like 00/30? Whoever wants to hear them fully WILL have to listen to at least few secounds of commercial; it seems like a common pattern to just switch it on some minuted beforehand so as not to spend extra attention to the exact time for switching on. For most people some commercials before news are an absolutely acceptable tradeoff.
I was not thinking right. Of course would that be a good idea, and thats a feasible approach.
While it would be a commendable effort, I do not believe it to be effizient to make a post for every possible country. Esp. USA seems to be already well-connected; and there are too many small countrys to make this feasible. Maybe set up an anonym world-map, where users can set flags?
I highly approve of new chances to get to a LW-meetup.
Extensive feminist social engineering schemes
Please tell me that this is an official phrase.
Performing before the same audience means that they are theoretically able to gather additional evidence everytime. Since (if both AI and Gatekeeper uphold their NDA) the only information open to the public is a yes/no, no gathering is possible.
The next time, dont be shy to open an open thread yourself! There is no group-norm that only high-karma-people may make them. http://lesswrong.com/r/discussion/lw/8nv/open_thread_december_2011/

There is actually a trick that you can use to retake a survey:
If you look at the URL of the feedback page for the survey you want to re-take, it contains “_process” in its URL. If you delete that section of the URL, you should be brought back to the original survey page.
We also use “waterstuff” for hydrogen.
I wonder on what scale such utilons would be measured; Apple is one of the least philantropic firms in the US!
Source: http://money.cnn.com/2008/03/02/news/companies/elkind_jobs.fortune/index4.htm
Important parts roughly excerpted:
“After Steve Jobs returned to the ruins of his life’s work, he froze the charity-programs of Apple; fourteen years later, they stay frozen altough Apple is the most valuable firm of the world, with the exception of 100k$. In comparison, other major technology firms spend tens of millions per year!”
Major edit: found an english source, replaced the german source.
For what its worth, I remembered especially you because of this comment by you, which reflects my thoughts on that matter completely, and also a comment by Eliezer_Yudkowsky which I cannot find right now. There he is like “nobody here should feel too good for themselves, because they do spend only a non-significant number of their income; user Rain is one of the few exceptions, he is allowed to.” That was in the aftermath of the singularity challenge. (in the event that my account of said comment is grossly wrong I would like to apologize in advance to everybody who feels wronged by that.)
