Does anyone remember a post/article on HS students who were allowed to allocate money to charities of their choice? I can’t seem to find it.
Thank you! Out of curiosity, are you accepting under-18s for the internship, or for research assistant positions?
The Airtable application mentions a summer internship, but there doesn’t seem to be any information about that on the jobs section of the website. Is that still open?
Not even a “In 90% of possible worlds, we’re irreversibly doomed, but in the remaining 10%, here’s the advice that would work”?
Suprising: the fact that Chuck Palahniuk’s writing style is visible in lsusr’s fiction. More suprising: the fact that Fight Club 2 deals with… memetics, of all things.

Didn’t end up completing this. Going to try starting one habit at a time. Starting with daily Anki review.
I think that having some form of daily to-do list will go a long way towards increasing my productivity and happiness, as it’ll help me keep track of sleep/exercise habits, stay on top of schoolwork, and help me spend my free time on things I actually want to work on. Here’s the one I came up with:
Plan out free time for the day
Review all due Anki cards
Go on a run, or use elliptical for 30 minutes
Update calendar
Work on schoolwork for at least an hour
Take a walk outside.
Work on learning math for at least 30 minutes
Write for at least 30 minutes
Take a melatonin at 8pm
Turn off phone by 9pm, be in bed with book when you finish working
Floss, brush teeth, wash face, use moisturizer, put in retainer
Set alarm for tomorrow morning
Meditate for 15 minutes
I made a printable version with checkli.
I hereby pledge to completing this to-do list every day for the next week. If it goes well, I’ll try longer-term.

During particular discussions, I observed my interlocutors—and sometimes myself—applying excessive nuance to points that don’t help us move further towards a mutual understanding or new insights.
Minor feedback: try to simplify that sentence, or break it up into smaller pieces. It seems, ironically, that that sentence may have too much nuance.
Good article otherwise, and I enjoyed reading.
Wearing the same outfit every day has worked well enough for me. This is a well written post, and I enjoyed reading it. Looking forward to reading more.
I wonder if the same process works for modafinil.
I’ve been considering switching from traditional high school to homeschooling due to (what I perceive as) the draining energy/time commitments of high school for very little actual education. Any general advice/things to look out for? The current problem I’d need to solve before homeschooling becomes a viable option is the lack of socializing with people—how was that for you before you went to public HS?
Cal Newport has a similar stance on college admissions. The main point of his book on high school is that pursuing the things that you’re actually interested in, and accomplishing something noteworthy with that interest, is a significantly better strategy for getting into college than loading your resume with extracurriculars/APs. That’s effectively dropping all effort to signal your ability to Do Things and focusing instead on actually Doing Things. Zvi’s post on The Thing and the Symbolic Representation of The Thing is relevant here as well.
The book also advocated some particular signaling strategies—a memorable one was “accomplishments that another person doesn’t immediately see how they themselves could do, like writing a book, are especially well-regarded”.
No wonder I felt disoriented.
Is it safe to assume you started with Part 4 on purpose?
Merry Christmas lsusr. Thank you for everything.
There are places I’ll remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone and some remainAll these places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I’ve loved them all--”In My Life”, The Beatles

This partially solves the problem that I had with the micromarriage concept, which was that dating that was unlikely to lead to marriage (high school relationships, for me) didn’t really count for a lot outside of “get better at dating in this relationship, which will make you more likely to marry one day”. However, I’d add that maybe the QAWY would be more helpful as a general measurement of total, for lack of a better word, utility gained from relationships; e.g. I would say that the total happiness/satisfaction/fulfillment from dating my girlfriend for a year would count as 0.x QAWYs, if that makes sense.
