Why are your competitors so few? If the development of superintelligent AI is going to be a hugely important event in the course of human history, why aren’t more people doing research motivated by it? You might as well ask why there are only 300 alignment researchers. For whatever reasons, most AI research simply isn’t that future-oriented.

I think quite a lot happens, or has already happened, in more secretive circles.
Do you have any particular reason to believe that, or is this a fully-general unfalsifiable belief in the existence of secretive circles devoted to arbitrary pursuits?
(Note that despite the phrasing, I recognize this to be as eminently reasonable as believing in aliens: the world is a big place, and it’s very easy to form a secretive circle.)
