It seems easier to check for ‘steganography’ by simply comparing it doing chain of thought unimpeded versus having its steps rewritten to be superficially different by a person, and then going from there. For a math based system, you could do it with a ‘dumb’ program. Once you’ve established its existence, it seems like planning how to test it would be simpler at that point.
