Something I think about whenever I read sci-fi enthusiasts discussing why Utopia is hard...
...is that I think Utopia is actually (relatively) easy to write, just not something sci-fi enthusiasts tend to be interested in.
Most soap operas and sitcoms basically take place in Utopia. Nobody is ever at risk of dying. The problems are minor inconveniences, often caused by interpersonal dynamics. The stakes are for (relatively) minor shifts in social standing. This is basically what I expect Utopia to look like.
This doesn’t require any major innovations in storytelling. It just requires the sort of mindset that outputs sitcoms and soap operas.
