Can you disclose if/when you run out of financial aid? And your criteria—so if I’m more open minded about donating to a broader array of people, I could. Or anyone else who wants to do the same.
I’m thinking it may be a good idea to sponsor people as an individual. I have around 10K saved and I suspect movement building is most valuable to EA at this point.
At the moment I’m thinking I should sponsor (a) Melbournians (b) who haven’t ever been and aren’t involved in local EA/rationality/LW events, (c) who want to attend, (d) have demonstrated any kind of excellence with EA promise above what I have in that area and (e) it isn’t a good idea for them to spend on the tix themself
I’d like to mention in advance that to preserve my pseudonymity for now I’ll be leaving them cash via dead drops. I’ll explain how it will work and it’s very simply, and not at all how you’re going to imagine it. For instance, my favourite is to leave cash in library books, then I can just send you the bar code (also good for doing transactions with potentially armed people, cause major libraries have weapons sensors, guards, the public, and limited exits—and it’s easy to hide in them).
For anyone interested in advance (I want to hear whether eaglobal can sponsor first, cause I’ve never done something like this before and it may not be an optimal use of my cash), let me know how you meet the criteria above. Don’t worry about fancy applications or anything.
Sorry for the delayed reply—the team has been in the thick of it running the three conferences!
Currently, we’re set for Melbourne, but the Oxford event has a $25K financial aid gap. The gap is large because we’re hoping to give aid to anyone who applied, requested aid, and was accepted. So, our criteria for dispensing financial aid is the same as our criteria for admission. (+ stated reasons why the person needs financial aid that are good reasons)
For the Google event, we had amazing support from the community in funding scholarships, so we’re now raising round two. Would you still be interested?
Cheers,
