My cynical take on FAI is that it’s a goal to organize one’s life around which isn’t already in the hands of professionals. I have no idea whether this is fair.
There’s also the belief that UFAI is in the hands of professionals… and that professionals miss some big picture insights that you could make without even knowing the specifics of the cognitive architecture of the AI, etc.
For people who are looking for a big goal so that their lives make sense, FAI is a project where it’s possible to stake out territory relatively easily.
It is a goal. It is not already in the hands of professionals. It is something around which one can organize one’s life. It’s hard to clear the ambiguity of whether it is one’s life that isn’t in the hands of professionals.
