Our duties towards EMs are merely indirect duties towards humanity. EM nature has analogies to human nature, and by doing our duties to EMs in respect of manifestations of human nature, we indirectly do our duty to humanity…. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of EMs.” (Regan and Singer, 1989: 23-24, replacing animal by EM (italics) by me)
OK. I didn’t consider this small humoristic change paraphrasing but I understand that it is not acceptable. How do I fix it? Retract the post? Edit the post? (with a note of the proposed reading) Reposting without the change here?
I wouldn’t worry about it at this point… Maybe next time you quote, do it verbatim, then suggest that a paraphrased quote might be more relevant yet still in the spirit of the original.
The book the fake quote is from is apparently http://www.amazon.com/Animal-Rights-Human-Obligations-Edition/dp/0130368644.
Downvoted for paraphrasing.
I didn’t know that that was discouraged. Thanks for the helpful comment and the link!
It’s a quote thread. Paraphrasing would be totally fine in the open thread.

I think a little bit of paraphrasing might be OK provided it’s indicated as such (by square brackets).
