Some of them might be voluntary refugees—but a huge part was deported against their will, sometimes into faraway parts of Russia. I’ve read they get papers stating that they must stay in those faraway regions for two years. I am curious what is the legal status of that. I suspect it is all very shaky even in Russian law standards and they can be helped with some pressure from the international community and maybe with just getting the information about their rights to them.
