Devotion to the truth for its own sake feels like Goodharting to me. I don’t care about truth. I care about beauty. I want the world to be beautiful—I want all phenomena to possess maximally their own unique excellence or arete—and truth is only a means to that end. An effective means, but only a means. Optimizing for truth and being willing to sacrifice anything for it is perverse and will destroy your humanity. Some beautiful lies are worth believing in order to make them true.
