I don’t think its basic premise is false. I think it is accurately describing a catch-22. It is easy to misread it as an argument that you choose between lying to others and lying to yourself, but in fact Paul himself notes that humans are not actually very good at lying. Or at sticking to the truth. A slightly more accurate title might have been: “If we can’t lie to others, we will lie to ourselves. Also, we can’t lie to others.”
