The way this has been addressed in the past is by posting two vote counters, e.g. “vote up if yes” and “vote up if no” (with another comment for karma balance if people care). It is pretty clumsy.

I think that the problem is that people aren’t voting the comment at all, so it’s a moot point. The comment has stayed on 1 as far as I can see.
It could be improved by a LW micro-poll feature.
If someone’s looking for a genuinely high-utility thing to do in the spirit of this post, hacking on the LW codebase might be a candidate :-)
