I think this would work better with each question asked separately, since they are not mutually exclusive.
Idea A: Accept that LessWrong has fulfilled its purpose and should be left to fade away, or allowed to serve as a meetup coordinator and repository of the highest quality articles.[pollid:702]
Idea B: Allow and encourage submission of rationalism, artificial intelligence, transhumanism etc related articles from elsewhere, possibly as a separate category.[pollid:703]
Idea C: Allow and encourage posts on “political” topics in Discussion.[pollid:704]
Idea D: Get rid of Open Threads and create a new norm that a discussion post as short as a couple sentences is acceptable.[pollid:705]
Personally, I fall on the ‘all of the above(except idea A)’ side of the fence. I primarily use LessWrong for the Main board, as it is an excellent source of well-edited, well-considered articles, containing interesting or useful ideas. I want the remainder of the site to thrive because if there is not a large, active userbase and new users being attracted, then I would expect to see the types of content I want to see become less frequent. All of these ideas seem like good things to do, keeping in mind that if these do not actually support the goal of making good Main articles more frequent, then they are not good things, and it seems possible that some of these could backfire.
Allow more and more varied posts to survive without karma bombing. My favorite other idea is charge downvoters one karma point for each downvote as is done on stackexchange.

I was actually surprised that (down)voting doesn’t cost karma. But doing so creates an imbalance and I now see it as beneficial. It is more the policity followed by voting that is the problem.
Which of the proposed solutions do you prefer?
