What does FOOM stand for?
It’s not an acronym. It’s an onomatopoeia for what happens when an AI self-recursively improves and becomes unimaginably powerful.
(A regular explosion goes BOOM; an intelligence explosion goes FOOM.)
I added it to the jargon page.
It’s the sound of an AI passing by, I guess.
Very rapid increase/acceleration. Originally it’s the sound you hear if you pour gasoline on the ground and set fire to it.
Friends Of Ol’ Marvel. It means that a self-improved unfriendly AI could turn into Galactus and eat the planet.
Jokes are not helpful answers to self-described “stupid questions”—you can safely assume the asker will likely miss that it’s a joke.
