I’d really like to agree with this article. It’d be great to live in a more “civilised” world, and the best way to make that a reality is to behave in a “civilised” manner.
Yet I still have niggling doubts, which I was reminded of when I encountered this quote:
“If fascism could be defeated in debate, I assure you that it would never have happened, neither in Germany, nor in Italy, nor anywhere else.”
I’m not Scott, but I think he’s arguing against using force to violate rights (kill people or shut them up). He’s not against using force to defend rights (when someone tries to kill you or shut you up).
