Think about it, if you have alternative A and alternative B, and choosing alternative A does not in some sense forgo alternative B, in what sense are they alternative? Could call them single alternative AB with absolutely no change in your expectations, yet tearing them up no longer even feels like an alternative use since it is the only use.
Of course, the time, energy, effort, and concentration you spend tearing up the tickets have alternative uses.
