Suggestions for 31C3 (Chaos Communication Congress)
Hi, I will be attending 31C3, the 31th chaos communication congress in Hamburg today and the next days. For those who don’t know about this hacker conference, here is a summary:
The 31st Chaos Communication Congress (31C3) is an annual four-day conference on technology, society and utopia. The Congress offers lectures and workshops and various events on a multitude of topics including (but not limited to) information technology and generally a critical-creative attitude towards technology and the discussion about the effects of technological advances on society.
This sounds a lot like a suitable forum for talking existencial risk from AI. But apparently no such talk is listed in the Fahrplan. As this appears to be a conference largely self-organized I might find a slot where I can present UFAI risks to a smaller audience.
Thus this is a request for material I might use to present this. My first idea was to use the MIRI executive summary. What else can I use? Some quick slides? Where might I link to best? What could I use as a quickl handout/flyer?
Yes this is on short notice but I admit that I didn’t draw this connection earlier. For me the 31C3 was ‘just’ a hacker conference to meet people at.
ADDED: And that’s what it ended to be. I met Joscha Bach and took part in a discussion about consciousness as computation. I met Oliver Habryka (good luck in California) and also people from the Berlin (Hi Tristan) and Frankfurt Meetups (Hi Kai). Overall a cool event though personally I didn’t get that much out of the talks.
Oliver Habryka did gave a lightning talk at an earlier 29C3 about UFAI risk.
I would consider it to be unlikley that someone gives you a full slot to talk about UFAI given that as far as I know you have no qualifications to speak about the subject.
A lot of people apply to give talk at the Chaos Comptuer Congress and you are well past the deadline when it comes to talks for this years congress.
The Chaos Computer Congress is self-organized in the sense that it has it’s own OSM network and world-wide the first event for that’s true. I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to think of the CCC as a small audience. For full talks there a call to papers and usually more people applying to give talks then slots are available.
I think that it would make a lot of sense to get a person from MIRI or FHI to hold a talk about UFAI at the Chaos Computer Congress and it’s likely a topic that would be accepted if handed in as a response to the call for papers.
I actually met Oliver on the 31C3 and he mentioned very mixed feedback to his talk on 29c3.
Thanks for the link (I found Olivers presentation at 1:50,00 in the video).
I’m aware of that. But I think there will be lots of smaller opportunities to talk about the subject. And it would be helpful to have some material handy on my phone/laptop.
