I have the same feeling—the current social consensus seems to have shifted away from using a price system to ration things (while re-prioritizing production). Which means that limits get imposed by political or luck-based mechanisms.
I don’t have a problem with price-based rationing, as long as the people on the left who would normally be my allies refrain from shaming people for “hoarding” stuff. Or opportunistically price gouging, for that matter. Full confession: in the early days of the pandemic I bought toilet paper on eBay for a tidy sum. I was earning good money putting in lots of overtime at NYS call centers.
