Decent update in favor of the top idea in your mind being really important.
Paul Graham wrote an essay called The Top Idea in Your Mind. He argues (to paraphrase from my memory) that a) you only have space for ~1 thing as the top thing in your mind, and b) that this one thing is what your brain is going to be processing and thinking about subconsciously, and is what you’re going to be making progress on.
Since starting this Updates Thread post, I’ve noticed myself thinking about the updates I make in everyday life, and looking for more pieces of evidence that I can update on. I think it’s because this stuff is the top idea in my mind right now.
(Like other updates, I think this one is more about saliency than actually changing my beliefs. I need to think more about what the differences between saliency and updating actually are and how they relate to each other. I’d love to hear more about what others think about this.)
