Hmm...if you are only building a shelter for bombings than yeah it would be pretty pointless but todays shelter is typically a multi-functioning unit that can serve as a safe place from everything from intruders to tornados or just extra storage. If your going to spend 40,000 for a giant empty basement (or worse one full of garbage you’ll never use and the mice that live in it) why not spend 40,000 on a smaller shelter that serves a purpose. The point is they are no longer just ‘bomb-shelters’ they are multi-functioning units that can be used for many different things ranging from riots to extra storage. They might also be used as a shelter that doesn’t interfere with the beauty of nature or perhaps a hunting hide-away. Also I can think of many other dumb things we spend our money like going out to eat and going to the bar. Most would argue they are to be passed down through families so that 100-200 years from now, if cared for, it can be given to your family. I also would say that most people who would invest in a bomb shelter probably already invest in things like bike helmets, a healthy mind and body and common accidental death. This notion that ‘preppers’ are some kind of moronic breed who eats red meat, chews tabacco and drives drunk is what an article like this is built on. If you are building a bomb shelter as some sort of paranoia that we are going to be eradicated by Russians and it serves no other purpose perhaps its dumb, otherwise its a good investment.
