I’d like to see a section listing current projects among the community.
I’ve picked up a vague sense of the growth out of LW (a few blogs, CFAR, Beeminder, Mealsquares, etc.), but a list of current work would be an impressive testimony of the effects of rationality.
But the point is for each listed project to give people direction as to what they can do with their new found rationality. It could list tasks to be done, how to prepare to do them, project needs. Let people know either what they can do, or what they can study to become able to do. Help them prepare by getting them involved and giving them feedback.
For example, on the projects page:
Packaging rationality for mass reception
Project name: Intentional Insights
Leader:
Tasks
Suggest a principle from the sequences which would be good to write up for mass consumption. Explain your choice
Outline an article based on a principle (see list of suggestions here)
Write up part of an article for review (the intro, an anecdote, the closing, data, an explanation of the data, a visual)
Review people’s writings here (suggest alternate wordings or approaches)
To get up to speed:
Read our thoughts on what kinds of principles are important for people to understand. Comment on what kind you think are important.
Read about how to outline articles for mass consumption
Read here about how to write certain parts of an article
These books are useful (list books)
Needs:
Someone to help us improve our understanding and application of marketing. How can we improve our impact with each article? See current suggestions.
Someone to work out how to make effective videos out of our articles. Someone with a good style to feature in the videos. Show us how you would do it, if you’re interested
This is a good idea, and having a sense of what the landscape looks like / what people are up to is a huge part of the community.
But I’m not quite sure the best way to manage it yet. There are problems with self-reports, and there are problems with matching; it’s one thing if someone like Vassar is keeping tabs on lots of projects and knows what holes are where, and when he comes across someone can say “ah, you’d likely fit in hole #14” and direct them accordingly, it’s another thing is someone says “hey, we need a X to do Y” and the wrong set of people responds due to difficulty in self-diagnosing X.
