Well, to be entirely fair, the recommender did warn us that we would most likely hate the book, since it would require us to discard all of our cherished assumptions. Of course, there could be other reasons for hating it, as well...
I am kind of curious to take a look at it, to be honest; maybe I’ll find a preview somewhere, when I have more time.
If you do read it, don’t worry about getting it in the original German. I have it on good authority that German philosophy students are often given English translations of Heidegger because they’re more readable.
You might also try Heidegger: A Very Short Introduction. I have the book, although I don’t think I ever read it; but it is short, deals mainly with the ideas (whatever they are) of “Being and Time”, and the reviews on Amazon are favourable.

Having attempted Heidegger in English, I can only shudder at what the German versions are like.
