If I value my life equally to the lives of others (...)
Edit: Since you don’t in terms of your revealed preferences, are you aspiring to actually reach such a state? Would an equal valuation of your life versus a random other life (say, in terms of QALYs) be a desirable Schelling point, or is “more altruistic” always preferable even at that point (race to the bottom)?
Depends on which part of my brain you ask. The altruistic faction does aspire to it, but the purely egoist faction doesn’t want to be eradicated, and is (at least currently) powerful enough to block attempts to eradicate it entirely. The altruist faction is also not completely united, as different parts of my brain have differing opinions on which ethical system is best, so e.g. my positive utilitarian and deontological groups might join the egoist faction in blocking moves that led to the installation of values that were purely negative utilitarian.
