Yes, a precise quantum mechanical simulation of a large macroscopic system is implausibly challenging.
No, this is not about capabilities. The thing the bird is trying to is called “navigating” and that does not require this specific mechanism. It can be done with GPS and require at most a watt or so of computing power. Probably quite a bit less since you can get away with course-correcting much less often than a human driving a car requires to stay on target.
I will grant that this gives a generous upper bound on the difficulty of making ems, assuming 1) you want them to be conscious and count as human but 2) you don’t actually know how to solve the Hard Problem in ways that let you simplify the compute requirement any further. I don’t see how that gives any information about the future of AI capabilities.
