Maybe it could be targeted non-invasively with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), which is already used therapeutically on a number of mental disorders. Especially considering that some people didn’t even bang their head, maybe brain damage is not actually required.

Apparently someone did exactly this in 2009. Could someone more familiar than me with the relevant literature have a look?
