Well, some people entertain themselves with TED talks and others watch cat videos. And kids get hypnotized by tablets before they can even talk. I’m pretty sure it’s all the same phenomenon, which has nothing to do with searching for meaning.
I think shiny screens (TV, internet, consoles, smartphones) are a superstimulus for human attention, like a laser pointer to a cat. Sometimes it happens to be meaningful but that’s not why we’re doing it. In any case it’s wiser to look for meanings when you’re not overstimulated.
