But I think there’s at least a chance that it may be less stupid than it sounds. He admits here that he may have accelerated AI research, that this may be a bad thing, and that AI should be regulated. And it’s not that difficult to bring these two together; here are two ideas
Slow capability. If he makes a half-assed attempt to start a competitor, the most likely outcome may just be that it sucks resources away from OpenAI without genuinely accelerating progress. Sort of like a split-the-vote strategy, which could lead to DeepMind getting a more genuine lead again.
