IIRC, The guys at Tricycle wanted to donate to SIAI, but realised/were told that they could more usefully donate their skills by making/maintaining LW.
Surely better to declare your affiliations and sponsors—rather than hide them—no?

I for one have no idea what the terms of the deals with the overlords are.
