I thought that ETRA was pretty transparently a fusion of FHI and MIRI, and that the professor was pretty clearly Eliezer mixed with Stephen Hawking. As did two of my friends watching it, both of whom read SSC and are familiar with LessWrong but dislike it and MIRI.
Also, I consider this a pretty decent portrayal. The villain is clearly villainous but sympathetic, and Elementary hasn’t done sympathetic villains much. And every character in the show portrayed as intelligent has a reaction to the AI-risk stuff of “Well, that’s a bit extreme,” not “You’re nuts!” They don’t believe it, but they take it seriously.
