BTW, unlike many other things about American culture I read on the Internet, that also applies to Italy (possibly even more so, contrary to what seems to be common belief), so in the great-grandparent “our culture” should be interpreted more broadly than you might have originally intended.

So far as I know, the business suit in a dull color is an international standard these days. I don’t know the history of it.
