bw: Maybe our disagreement is superficial in that case, except for Nick’s proposed change in order of operation and your misuse of the concept of anthropic bias. I have no commitment to the idea of living indefinitely, just to the idea of not committing to dying at any particular time just out of custom. There are some things that I’d like to do or seen done that seem very hard by human standards. They should provide plenty of challenge for quite a few centuries with my current capabilities if they are not outright impossible. Maybe there really isn’t anything beyond them, that is, no further set of achievements, experiences, or resolutions that I would derive from my current self in any number of centuries. At some point there probably isn’t. Even then I don’t see much down-side to living longer. Boredom, ennui, suffering of all kinds, these are just the consequences of physical processes in my brain that I could easily eliminate if I didn’t want them and if I had greater capabilities, they aren’t something fundamental to how the universe is. But if someone else wants my mass/energy and I’m done with it I don’t intend to decide now as an infant that my grown-up self should horde it reflexively.
