I’m currently writing a science fiction story set around the time of the singularity. What newsworthy events might you expect in the weeks, days, or hours prior to the singularity. (and in particular prior to friendly AI)
This story is from the perspective of someone not directly involved with any research.
Example: For the purpose of the story, I’m having the FAI team release to the public a ‘visualization of human morality’ a few days before they go live with it.
For the purpose of the story, I’m having the FAI team release to the public a ‘visualization of human morality’ a few days before they go live with it.
I would expect astute but untrusting parties to hit the FAI team with every weapon and resource they have at their disposal.
Singularity via FAI, intelligence explosion, right? Not much need actually happen, unless the story is set in a sim universe with a delayed reaction god. if so, then imagine the disaster movie of your choice :-)
If it is set in our world -
After the visualization of morality announcement, I think that for a short while, there might be some typical tribalism blather on. “You’re not considering other cultures, etc. Euro centric(if the team is in the anglosphere), etc.”
I agree with djcb rather than wedrifid. They will not consider a SIAI like body seriously. However, if its Stanford University or a major chinese university, then there will be a serious reaction. Arrests and interogations are likely, bombing of facilities, unlikely. Most humans will still believe the AI only to be a tool which they can manipulate to their ends. Little do they know! (cue, evil laugh, except done for GOOD this time!)
Events in the weeks leading
publishing of a complete mapping of how a human understands a concept done via brain emulation in some other place. This yields the last piece of the puzzle for the FAI team. But to the rest of the world, it is just another cool concept. Software firms are looking at semantic web applications in 1 year tops.
Days or hours before—not sure. anything could be happening.
Interesting… most technology is gets around only slowly, with the impact
becoming clear only after a while. The biggest exception must be the atomic
bomb—at least for the outside world. That’s one way to think of it: what
would have happened if they’d announced the A-bomb a few months in advance.
Alternatively, if the development is done by some relatively unknown group,
the reception may be more like what you’d get if you’d announce that you built
a machine that will solve the world’s energy problem—disbelief and
skepticism.
