Well this is going to be fun. This combined with something at 14:00 and there goes my Thursday.
Actually, while we’re on the subject of Israel, does anyone know a cheaper way to get math textbooks into this country than having Amazon ship them from Europe or Asia through Israeli customs, which is really expensive? Because there’s a lot of math books related to the MIRI curriculum I’d quite like to obtain.
I’m already in the group, but I don’t get its emails sent. I wish Google had a setting for sending me an email whenever a new topic is posted and then letting me choose to follow up or not on the web interface for Groups.
(This means you, Googlers on LW!)
Thanks for the notice about its being moved to tomorrow.
I don’t mind at all, but it severely restricts the range of books I can get. For instance, I want a decent probability-theory textbook to go back and learn the subject from scratch, including continuous, calculus-and-measure-based probability as well as the discrete, combinatorics-based stuff I had in undergrad.
Also, if you just send one book at a time, I think customs usually doesn’t bother you.
Depends on the monetary value of the book. If you’re actually mail-ordering something, a receipt gets included and thus usually a customs charge. For textbooks, this is painful.

Hi Eli, pls notice the meetup was moved to Wednesday. Also, I advise you to follow https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/lesswrong-tel-aviv

Get ebook versions, if you don’t mind using them.

Actually hunting in an ebook store returns one text that reviews say is really about Markov models, and one really interesting-looking text by Jaynes that I probably don’t have the math background to fully appreciate right now.
