I found this post to be very interesting, but I guess I would have liked a more detailed scenario explaining how privacy norms can be manipulative. Then again, maybe this counts as an infohazard?
It’s not an infohazard, just, well, private. A few issues were
a) I’d have to break my explicit and implicit commitments to Dave and Carla more significantly in order to go into more details. I chose to reveal a small amount of information here to illustrate the point, but I think revealing more information would
b) it’d be easy for this post to fall into a “vagueblogging about a person” genre
c) other examples I have in mind, the person doing the manipulation seemed less in bad faith (i.e. the manipulation seemed a bit accidental, or I’m less sure about it), so going into details feels less justified / more of a betrayal
I think it’s possible to construct a good hypothetical fictional example that’s rooted in truth but it’s surprisingly hard.
