Depends. Do you count honking at me when I don’t realize a light has changed? That certainly “worked”. I’d do the same to others, and I expect them to do the same to me.

Many people don’t see the intellectual issues to be as clear-cut as traffic lights, especially in complex discussions. If someone honks at you on the road and it isn’t obvious that you are making a driving error, it’s going to get your back up, right? Same thing in intellectual discussions. Even if it should be obvious to someone that they are making an intellectual error, it’s not always the right move to honk at them immediately.
Here’s something that’s only a suggestion—I think it’s worked pretty well for me, but I don’t have the same emotional habits you do.
Use punishment only as a last resort. It’s a very inexact tool for getting what you want, or even for avoiding what you don’t want.
The fact that you’re angry isn’t going to make punishment into a better tool.
