On the list of things likely to cause unreasonable attachment, it’s pretty far down. Love of familiarity, wanting to appear intelligent to others, wanting to appear intelligent to oneself, unwillingness to face conclusions that one finds unpalatable, general inflexibility… these are all plausible causes of failure.
