It’s a bizarre authoritative / normative assertion completely out of place in all of this. And Eli knows that, I’m sure. I suspect that he’s just had this directive beat into him in previous encounters, in objection to the “coldness” of purely utilitarian decision-making. If e.g. an argument-ending bullet is what it takes to ensure humanity gets off-planet, then the utilitarian answer is to shoot.
