I’m looking at places to relocate to from the United States south. My plan is to search for job opportunities in ideal locations until I find one that I can obtain, then obtain it. At the moment, I’m composing a list of candidate locations (both in and out of the U.S.) that meet my criteria, but I’d also like an outside opinion as well.
What are some ideal locations to move to for permanent residency?
I avoided listing my criteria because I wanted an unfiltered idea of what people here consider a “good place to live.” Since you asked, though, I’ll tell you my areas so far:
In the United States, I am looking for cities and areas that show some forward thinking and planning (generally determined by looking at their environmental measures and infrastructure as well as their economic history), a healthy population (generally aligned with a good healthcare system), and an active intelligence community (libraries are my field so, aside from personal enjoyment of intelligent groups to associate with, this helps in securing a job). Some cities on my list: Austin, Texas; Boulder, Colarado; the Bay area of California; the Research Triangle of North Carolina; the northern area of Vermont and New Hampshire (more for environment and well being); and the Seattle area of Washington.
Outside of the U.S. I am looking at countries that display much the same qualities. A strong economy and infrastructure, an active intelligent division, a reliable healthcare system. Countries of interest so far are: Luxembourg, Switzerland, France, the United Kingdoms. I’m also looking at Canada, especially for its proximity to the U.S. and the main providers of cyronics should that become a factor in my decision making.
The San Francisco Bay Area is okay at environmental policy, but it’s astonishingly bad at infrastructure. People move here for jobs and human capital, not because it’s a well-managed urban area; it really, really isn’t.
Hmm, that I was not aware of. I’ll have to look closer at their infrastructure and see how bad they are and how that changes my opinion. Thanks for the info.

Which languages do you speak? While it is possible to function comfortably speaking only American in the UK, Luxembourg and much of Switzerland, France is a no-go.
English. Part of my build up to a potential move (should I decide on another country) is to learn a second language. Probably French if I’m planning to move to the continent.
Where Emigrate?

Something like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercer_Quality_of_Living_Survey ? (though if you’re like me then filtered by local language). Of course that assumes you want to live in a city.
That is indeed a handy resource. Thank you for the link.
What are your criteria? And what places meet them so far?

In Berlin you will get much farther via English than in France. Berlin has relatively cheap rent for being a major city.

That doesn’t sound like southward at all.
