You know how there’s standard advice to frame desires / recommendations / policy proposals / etc. in positive rather than negative terms? (E.g., to say “It’s good to X” and not “It’s bad to Y”?)
I bet this is actually good advice, and that it’s significantly about reducing the “doing costly things just to visibly not be like Y” dynamic Zvi is talking about. I bet it happens both between multiple people (as in Zvi’s examples) and within a person (as in e.g. the examples in “pain is not the unit of effort”).
