Goal setting journal (November)
Inspired by the group rationality diary and open thread, this is the second goal setting journal (GSJ) thread.
If you have a goal worth setting then it goes here.
Notes for future GSJ posters:
1. Please add the ‘gsj’ tag.
2. Check if there is an active GSJ thread before posting a new one. (Immediately before; refresh the list-of-threads page before posting.)
3. GSJ Threads should be posted in Discussion, and not Main.
4. GSJ Threads should run for no longer than 1 week, but you may set goals, subgoals and tasks for as distant into the future as you please.
5. No one is in charge of posting these threads. If it’s time for a new thread, and you want a new thread, just create it.
to make the Android game I’m developing ready for launch in google play (only in regard of product development), before the end of this year.
can you predict how many hours you have left on the project?
I had not thought of that, I will do some calculations, correct from outside view and such, and report back to later know how off the mark I was.
To remind myself time and again, until my brain learns and understands it: without a change in diet (or lifestyle) there is no change in weight.
Are you doing any kind of weight, diet or exercise tracking? Often the act of simply keeping track of these things will prompt people to improve in them.
If you don’t mind: Post your current weight/diet/exercise and your target (date and weight) for next month.
No actions yet. I tend to ignore any kind of actions that I plan; maybe the problem is the wrong way my brain thinks about it, so this is an attempt to change the brain before I really attemt to change the body.
A suggestion: Can you think of systems that you can set up for you to do the actions tomorrow. It’s suprisingly harder to convince yourself to go for a run right now; but surprisingly easier to set up an expectation that you will do it later/tomorrow.
Simply the act of preparing your running stuff, (shoes, water bottle etc.), then put it in a place where you can’t ignore it. (i.e. a doorway) so that you “just do it”.
might be a viable course of action to get you to do the desired thing...
I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work, unless those are very basic and fast things, e.g. applying night cream, but not going for a run.
I’ve developed (as protective mechanisms against my mother) lots of ways to not let myself succeed at anything. I know now that I need to move very slowly to get anything done, so I’m mostly untangling my thoughts and aliefs about myself.
This is one of the few occasions when habitually seeing situations and problems from more than one side doean’t help.
That seems like a different problem...
back to this—if that’s what you are trying to do—have you tried signposting yourself; in places that you will see?
There was a movie “hollow man” where the main character had a sign above his desk so when he lent back in his chair and looked at the roof he saw it, it said “get back to work”.
And it is a different problem, but it throws shade at everything I do. Before I properly unlearn this, I need ways around.
I haven’t thought of signposting, I’ll try that!
Create a pitch deck, meet with >= 3 investors, and decide whether I want to go the equity crowdfunding route or the angel route.
Do you know where you will find investors? /who you will meet with? (this seems like the hardest step)
Do you have an existing network to tap into in order to find these things; or get advice on equity/angel stuff? (if not—how will you go about getting that?)
I have an interested investor already, as well as a couple people who have expressed interest in meeting with others.
I have a small network which can at least get me three meetings, but I will have to expand it after that.
what is the next step in the process?
what is the hardest step in the process?

Comment on this guys thing!
l2 How to feel less ashamed of all the fails, corrections and criticisms/comments on my university work, and actually appreciate and learn from the feedback and grow from it.
I suggest just choosing one or two goals, probably from the easier and more specific goals, and then doing them.
I was surprised to find for myself that having a really fast moving imagination can be a problem.
Same here. One problem with accomplishing my goals is that I am too good at inventing new ones. So it’s difficult to stay focused on one goal as long as is necessary to complete it. It’s rare to have a goal that feels so important that even weeks later it is still a priority #1.
Can you predict how many hours each of these tasks will take you to complete? (probably easier to edit and add on estimates like “5hrs”, “30mins” etc.)
The effort taken to formaly estimate that would exceed the time to complete some of these tasks
have you tried ordering your to-do list by the length of time it takes to complete things?
nope, can’t be bothered. Seems unnecessary
A rough ordering by amount of time needed is actually very important. I’m not saying you need to be accurate within 10%, but having some idea of what’s likely to take minutes, an hour, a lot of hours, weeks, or months is the only way you can tell whether you’re likely to achieve a goal—or make progress toward it—in a given chunk of time.
I’ll give it a try. I have updated my original post.
