I used to do really stupid things and waste lots of time trying to do something in the path of least resistance. I’m not sure if other people have the same problem, but might as well post.
An example of being stopped: “Hmm, I can’t find any legitimate food stands around here. I guess I’ll go eat at the ice cream stand right here then.”
An example of overcoming: “Hmm, I can’t find any legitimate food stands around here. That’s weird. Lemme go to the information desk and ask where there is one.”
What it feels like:
You have a goal
You realize that there are particular obstacles in your way
You decide to take a suboptimal road as a result
What you do to prevent it:
Notice that the obstacle isn’t that big of a deal, and figure out if there are ways to circumvent this. If those ways are easy, do them. Basically, move something from not reachable to reachable.
I should have made it clear when a trivial inconvenience ceases to be trivial.
Basically, if you have an object level understanding of what’s in your way, can think of a way to avoid the problem, and don’t see any other steps involved, then you should go ahead and do it.
I personally am normed to give up waaay too easily compared to what I can do.
