I decided on using “Motivated stopping” and “Motivated continuation” as my two examples.
To successfully avoid motivated stopping, someone who thinks he can use Solomonoff Induction to simulate “what is it like to be the epistemology of a mind” should think if he has or not considered in detail how much of our understanding of gross-level affective neuroscience can be mapped into a binary ´01010001´ kind of description, and if he has sufficiently detailed evidence to go on and write smth like http://arxiv.org/PS_cache/arxiv/pdf/0712/0712.4318v1.pdf (This is not a critique of Peter de Blanc, but of Solomonoffist Inductors in general)
To successfully avoid motivated continuation, someone who thinks she can make easy money without much effort should
1) Notice if her decision to postpone actually doing it because she believes it doable is a form or akrasia, or fear of the twinge of starting
2) Think if she would be confortable explaining her thesis on how to easily make money to a friend (and not embarassed by it)
3) Wonder if she keeps reading about how to do it in order to feel the warm glow of reading Tim Ferris-like material and pretending to be awesome or if there is an actual need for more information then she presently has.
