Quite a bit of what I say gets lots & lots of karma votes but sort of middle ground net karma. It’d be helpful to know if this is about people being split on whether they agree with what I’m saying, or if it’s a split on whether it belongs on LW whatsoever.
…although maybe folk won’t make a very careful distinction between those when voting, so maybe I still don’t get to know!
A minor suggested tweak for this experiment: Maybe change the “overall karma” hovertext to say something more along the lines of “How much do you think this contributes to the conversation?” So instead of it being about liking, it’s about fitting to the atmosphere. This gives room for someone to, say, share arguments stemming from their Catholic faith in ways that are absolutely relevant to the conversation without having the comment downvoted into oblivion due to people here disliking religion.
Again, maybe tweaking hovertext won’t matter that much. And maybe that distinction is too subtle to matter for most folk. But if LW can collectively make that shift, I think it’d be pretty cool.
I tentatively quite like this.
