I think this (especially the second part) is missing a fundamental aspect of … well, not just money, but decision-making. It’s about expectations and projections into the future, not about the current definition or valuation.
Debt is no more a hack than is money itself. Neither actually exist, they are simply contingent future values. Zero is not special in this world.
